Tech Tuesday: EdPuzzle

Looking for a tool to engage students while watching a video? Like Nearpod, there's a library of pre-created videos and formative assessment checkpoints, but also add voice-overs, comments, resources, and quizzes to videos.

Goal: transform instruction by personalizing online, dynamic videos to prompt students to think critically, reflect, and respond

The WHY behind Edpuzzle

Trying out a flipped classroom? The Modern Classroom Project? Or, just want to include an awesome video to further engage students while formatively collecting data? Edpuzzle is for you!

After watching the intro video, you hopefully have a better understanding of how and why to use Edpuzzle. If you're not convinced yet, here are a few years shared by our own staff members:

"I didn't think there were any videos that would support my content, but when I heard about Edpuzzle, I found videos much more engaging than me just talking. These videos could be played at each student's own pace and I could easily tell when they got it and could move on versus the students I needed to work a little more with before proceeding." - Engineering teacher

"I was taking a recertification course and we were students using it for the class. It was some of the ELD credits for our second language learners. We learned about using Edpuzzle to frontload vocab and concepts for ELL’s and sped students." - Science teacher

"It was tough at first trying to figure out how to make it accessible to students, but an easy intro, exit ticket, or review video that I didn't have to make was the best...especially when it goes right into Schoology. It's so easy to see who has learned and mastered the concept and who still needs help." - Language Arts teacher

"I don't have time to create my own videos, so Edpuzzle and Nearpod and all those other video tools have been super helpful. Edpuzzle easily integrates with Schoology, which is nice, and there are just so many videos in the library pre-created with Edpuzzle. I do like adding my own video or from YouTube every so often." - Social Studies teacher

"There was an Edpuzzle video had questions I didn't even think about asking! Super cool." - Music teacher

Intermediate

  • TRY THIS! Hold students accountable by utilizing the Students/Questions toggle options and

    • Students tab - overview of how much each student has watched of the video, when they were last watching the video, and when they turned in the assignment. Clicking on a student's name will provide individual data.

    • Questions tab - overview of all questions how many students got it right and then, more specifically, which students got it wrong

  • Have students create their own video project for assignments and assessments (using audio, video, etc.)

  • Resource: Managing Student Progress

Advanced

Transform your slides/presentation into an interactive video

  • TRY THIS! Use the Edpuzzle Extension for Chrome to turn your Slides or presentation into a video lesson WHAAAAAAAAAAAAT?! Yes you heard that right. Are you going to be out for the day and didn't make sub plans because you need to teach that super important lesson you were going to continue teaching? Use the extension to screencast your presentation and include checkpoints (questions) for understanding. You can also use this to collect assessment data to differentiate your instruction and small group lessons.

  • Resources: Edpuzzle Math, Science, Social Studies, English Language Arts
