Road Trip - Do's and Don't Abroad

As you could imagine, traveling can be terrifying in a foreign country. Here are a few Do's and Don't I learned throughout our Rotorua Road Trip. Whether you're traveling for the weekend or a week, I realized it's important to keep these things in mind before, during and after your trip. Budgeting is super important, but I discovered not everyone needs to put together a specific budget because they love souvenir shopping like I do.

Do's

Travel

  1. Allow for extra time traveling, weather conditions, and worse-case-scenario situations just in case so your whole stay isn't thrown off.

  2. Rent a car ONLY IF YOU HAVE GOTTEN ENOUGH SLEEP AND KNOW HOW TO DRIVE ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE ROAD, consider roundabouts, right turns, looking before crossing the road, etc.

  3. Plan days/attractions/itinerary accordingly based on location and accessibility.

  4. Check cheap flight websites (GrabASeat.co.nz, IKnowThePilot.co.nz)

Stay

  1. Look into Air BnBs instead of hotels if you're looking for a quick stay.

  2. Make a check list of what you want to bring, even if it's a weekend trip because you need to make sure you take and bring back everything.

  3. Research and look into reviews of the places you want to go/stay.

Attractions

  1. Take guided tours, Hop on Hop off buses, and other tours developed by professionals because they do know what is worth seeing in realistic time.

  2. Pick something everyone might like to do, but also keep your preferences in mind as you might not be able to come back again.

Don'ts

Travel

  1. Bring all of your valuables and precious jewelry (if you need to, keep it on your body at all times).

  2. Leave on traffic-heavy day or traffic-heavy time because you will regret it.

  3. Rely on one person, transportation mode, or time slot because you might not be lucky that day.

  4. Travel somewhere just to go somewhere without ample time to explore.

Stay

  1. Rent the cheapest hostel just in case it's not safe or clean.

  2. Only stay at expensive hotels because that's what you're use to.

  3. Rely on your place to have transportation, amenities, or other accommodations.

Attractions

  1. Book a tour just because it's cheap.

  2. Wait until the last minute to book tours or arrive at the place because that's rude and gives you (and/or your travel buddy) unnecessary anxiety.
