It's vlog-o'clock somewhere

Updated: Jun 4, 2018

While student teaching in the states, I kept a vlog (video + blog = vlog) everyday after school reflecting on each day. I was required to write a journal entry weekly, but because I was extremely busy and tired after school, I decided to try vlogging. The hardest part was starting my vlog and consistently recording; it was awkward at first, but once I got the hang of it, my audience expressed how impressed and eager they were to watch the next day's vlog! Occasionally I'll have a few student guests reflect with me on my vlog, fellow teachers, or other individuals who might have been in the classroom that day. Therefore, when I mentioned my vlogging experience to my host teacher here in NZ, she was thrilled and ready to learn. So, my first official day teaching, I taught the students how to VLOG!

I introduced this tool with two YouTube video examples (of course) where we learned the top 10 tips for Beginner Vloggers:

  1. Find something you enjoy, like talking about - reflect on something you liked or really enjoyed today!

  2. One working camera - we will be using Chromebooks

  3. Keep camera steady - if introducing a friend or showing a part of the classroom, be steady and use a friend or table if needed

  4. Always move your camera slower than you think

  5. Be energetic and upbeat, but annunciate and be clear - even if you're shy, try to introduce yourself and think about what you like to watch on TV / YouTube

  6. Don't over edit - students can edit their vlogs only if they answer their required ?s

  7. No loud music - refer to #6

  8. Show your personality!! - students have the freedom to express themselves!

  9. Be consistent, posting regularly - students will be sharing weekly

  10. TAKE ACTION - put purpose behind your vlogs, don't just record to hear yourself

Additionally, I taught the students a few internet safety tips. For example, not sharing personal information, keeping our language appropriate, keeping in mind the audience (us, the teachers), and who to share their vlogs with (whether their school or personal ones).

Traveling Tip #8: Create a vlog (or blog) to document your whole trip!
