Growing up with no experience (or really, any knowledge) on these two sports, I thought it would be in my best interest to do some research. Many girls in my class play for the school's netball teams and the numerous boys play rugby. As far as I know, the boys team is out of season, but the girl's netball team practices weekly with games every Thursday. With the goal of attending a game, I had to know what might be happening and if it is just getting a ball in a net (net + ball). So, first, I would like to give YouTube a shout out for its incredible helpful examples and explanations.
In American sport-terms, I have come to the conclusion that netball is like basketball without the dribbling. The girls wear spandex-dress type uniforms and play on a tennis-court like field.
The positions, worn on their uniforms, consist of:
Goal Shooter To score goals and to work in and around the circle with the GA
Goal Attack To feed and work with GS and to score goals
Wing Attack To feed the circle players giving them shooting opportunities
Center To take the centre pass and to link the defence and the attack
Wing Defense To look for interceptions and prevent the WA from feeding the circle
Goal Defense To win the ball and reduce the effectiveness of the GA
Goal Keeper To work with the GD and to prevent the GA/GS from scoring goals
The goal is for the to get the ball across the court to the GS or GA for them to shoot the net ball into the net.
After a few YouTube videos, I thought I was ready to attend my first netball game. Traveling Tip #14: YouTube has fantastic examples of everything. Search a few activities, sports, or common interests to develop a better understanding of the cultural hobbies. The weather was playing games all week, but the school's netball teams came ready to play Thursday night. Our host mum dropped my roommate and I off at the courts and we watched the girls practice and then dominate during the other team. Winning both games, the Year 7 and Year 8 teams did phenomenally. What athletes I had in my class!
(Below is the Year 8 girls and I after their game)
Traveling Tip #15: Go to a local sporting event, whether you've seen a game before or not; it gives you a feel for the audience and hype of the sport.
